A 19th century Welsh wool sampler

£195.00

A gloriously colourful antique Welsh wool sampler with beautiful motifs, circa late 19th century. The neat cross stitch embroidery features a superb red house flanked by two stylised trees with baskets of fruit and animals beneath it. Traditional letter stitching above including three lines of Welsh and ‘Mary Jones Born February 1st 1885’ along the bottom of the sampler. The antique birdseye maple moulding of the frame suits the sampler perfectly.

It stopped me in my tracks because I absolutely love samplers that feature houses, particularly red ones which seem to be a favoured colour of the time.

It is in good condition retaining wonderfully vibrant colours. There is a tiny hole in the gauze where the threads have become loose. Some wear to the frame with mild losses to the veneer. A real beauty!
