A pair of rare early 19th century copperplate ichthyological engravings, printed between 1805 and 1807.
They were drawn by the famous German naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723-1799) whose illustrations were renowned for their scientific accuracy and artistic detail. They were used in publications such as Sir Charles Linnaeus & Ebenezer Sibley’s ‘A Genuine and Universal System of Natural History’.
Interestingly, Carl Linnaeus was the Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist who formalised the system of binomial nomenclature which is still in use today.
Foxing / discolouration to paper. Small tear (loss) to edge beneath ‘The Apua’.
