An antique Scandinavian folk art bentwood box with fabulous hand painted Rosemaling decoration, circa late 19th century.
These beautiful boxes are also known as tine boxes because of the distinctive tines at each end that hold the lid on. They were traditionally used all over northern Scandinavia, particularly Norway, as a provisions box or lunch pail. The wood, normally birch, was soaked in water and bent into an oval shape before being decorated with folk art designs and inscriptions such as the one on this box.
A wonderful piece of Scandinavian folk art and a superb decorative piece.
It is in lovely condition. There is a tiny sprinkling of ancient woodworm holes. The box is opened by gently pulling the right hand tine outwards to release the lid.
25cm long
12cm wide
15cm high (to top of tine)
